Iron Maiden has a new studio album coming out on Sept. 4 called The Book of Souls. According to an interview with Corriere Della Sera, lead singer Bruce Dickinson announced the album’s track “Tears of a Clown” was inspired by Robin Williams. Dickinson calls it his “favorite song” on the new set, musing on the tragedy of Williams’ apparent happiness while he was struggling with depression and illness on the inside. “Tears of a Clown” will be track 9 on the new LP. The song was written by Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith and bassist Steve Harris.
Aug. 11, 2015 marked the one-year anniversary of the storied comedian’s suicide. He took his own life at the age of 63, struggling with severe depression and the onset of Parkinson’s disease.
