Poor circulation can play havoc with your health. Here are five ways, shared by a US doctor, that can help improve blood flow, including diet and exercise. These are sure to help.
Most people don’t pay attention to blood circulation and its role in overall health. The circulatory system is responsible for transporting oxygen and essential nutrients to every part of the body, helping muscles and organs function optimally. However, when plaque accumulates in the arteries or blood vessels become blocked, circulation can get affected and lead to serious health complications.
In his new post on Instagram, Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine physician, shared five effective ways of improving blood flow. “Healthy blood flow is not supported by one habit alone. Movement, hydration, vascular protection, metabolic health, and nitric oxide production all work together to keep blood vessels functioning well,” he wrote.
Walking regularly
Walking has multiple benefits, one of which is improving circulation and helping blood vessels stay healthy. “Walking increases blood flow and creates shear stress along vessel walls, which helps the endothelium function more effectively. A healthier endothelium supports blood vessel relaxation, blood pressure regulation, and nitric oxide signalling,” Dr Sood shared.
Staying hydrated
Since blood contains a large amount of plasma, staying hydrated helps support healthy blood volume and smooth circulation. “Dehydration can affect blood viscosity, vascular function, and blood pressure regulation, especially during heat, exercise, or illness,” he added.
Avoiding smoking and vaping
Both smoking and vaping are considered bad not just for your blood circulation but also overall health. Smoking damages blood vessels by increasing oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial injury, while vaping can cause endothelial dysfunction and vascular stress. “Protecting the vessel lining is one of the most important steps for long-term circulatory health.”
Strength training
According to Dr Sood, resistance training helps the body use insulin more effectively, manage blood sugar levels, regulate blood pressure, and maintain muscle strength. Studies also suggest that it can enhance blood vessel function by improving their ability to widen and support healthy blood flow.
Nitrate-rich foods
It is for a reason they say eat your greens and veggies. Incorporating vegetables like arugula, beets, spinach, and lettuce increases the intake of nitrate, which can be converted into nitric oxide. “Nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax and widen, supporting blood flow and vascular health,” he concluded.
FAQs on benefits of improving blood circulation
1. What is the biggest benefit of improved circulation?
Energy and stamina. Better blood flow ensures your muscles, brain, and vital organs get a steady, efficient supply of oxygen and nutrients.
2. How does it affect heart health?
It lowers your cardiovascular workload. Smooth circulation reduces strain on your heart, helping to lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of blood clots.
3. Does it actually improve skin health?
Yes. Enhanced blood flow carries away cellular waste and delivers fresh oxygen to skin cells, promoting faster healing and a natural glow.
4. Can better circulation help with cold hands and feet?
Absolutely. Poor circulation often leaves extremities freezing because warm blood isn’t reaching them efficiently. Improving it keeps your core and extremities regulated.
5. How does it impact the immune system?
It speeds up your body’s defense. White blood cells and antibodies travel through your bloodstream; faster circulation helps them reach and fight off infections much quicker.
